We’ve all been there.... trying to fix something we just don’t understand.. But geez.. even being the total bash-bash mechanic I am, I don’t think I’ve ever been this bad....

This is a pic from a guy in a facebook motorcycle group I’m in... He’s trying to figure out how to remove the wheel off his old yamaha shaft drive. Dude-brah, I think you’re doing it wrong.....

Kinja'd!!!

I’d hate to see him try to change a tire on his car...

actually, depending on the model, this is not “wrong” mearly the “hard way” depends on if he’s doing brake work too, or just wants to change the tire.

I think I can ID what “logic” went into this. See, if this were a bicycle, you’d remove the whole hub, so in his tiny little unfamiliar-with-cars brain (not thinking “cars are easier than this, there’s got to be a better way”) he fell back on how bicycles work. If you’re missing the eye for “how is this done most easily” and have to work by what’s most familiar, bad things like this happen.

Recall a Car Talk letter where the guy was lovingly removing, cleaning, and reinstalling various parts in the engine bay of an old 911. One big bolt was particularly stubborn, but he got it off and it stopped doing the job it was there for - holding in the engine, which landed on his leg.

Mind you, I’ve done some dumb shit as well. Two carbs in an old Volvo I had in college, rebuilt one twice - a great learning experience to get the second one done.

Rebuilt the same carb- that’s fucking epic! I could totally see myself doing that.... haha

And edited to add- a buddy of mine showed up one day with his face all bruised up. “What happened??” He was trying to replace his audi’s transmission and was under it when I took out the last bolt....

Bike, motorcycle, whatever - how do you not start by pulling the axle bolt???

He’s going to disassemble that whole bike around the wheel if that’s what it takes damnit!

Well, on a bicycle you take the axle *loose* and then slide. I’m guessing he took one look at it (possibly after loosening) and went “well, I need the wheel to go back and there are things still stopping me, hurr durr”. No pulling it completely out because... that’s not what you’d do on a bicycle. Just my guess, though.

budy of mine swears by removing the entire rear drive unit on old shafty Yamahas when taking the wheel off. Let’s you lube everything and he claims it makes reassembly easier.

The late Tom Magliozzi told a story about how he dropped an F-150 tranny onto his chest. Ouch.

Have heard of people wailing on thier wheels for hours with a rubber mallet trying to get the splines to come apart, when 15 additional minutes to take the drive unit off lets you perform (often deferred) necessary lubrication and have room to work those suckers apart.

Most of those just have a spline tube (see coupling joint in the below diagram) that connects the rear shaft to the stub out of the angle-drive unit.

Kinja'd!!!

they vary is diameter and design, but the principle is the same, a hollow spline shaft thats held in position by a spring and a circlip. One side fits on the input stub to the angle gear, the other fits the end of the drive shaft. In older bikes they are the same spline pattern for both and fully reversible. Without the shaft-tube and angle gear bolted together they just fall apart.
